RAT RACE SEA TO SUMMIT: GREECE

A stunning route that connects the azure waters of the Aegean with the rugged summit of the ‘home of the gods’ and one of the World’s most famous mountains – Mount Olympus.

£700-£800 3 DAYS /
3 NIGHTS

FROM 3RD SEPTEMBER– 6TH SEPTEMBER 2021

SUMMARY:

Whilst this is ‘only’ 1.5 days of activity, it’s a HUGE day. 3.5km of vertical, over 27km, with a start at Oh My God O’Clock in the morning. The distance is not the issue here; it is the pace of ascent and the gradient, which after the 20km mark pretty much is a 1:4 gradient all the way to the summit. it is literally a 27km climb from sea level to the high point of Greece. A spectacular undertaking, but not one to be taken lightly. Conditioning for distance and for mountain hiking or running is essential.

Ascend from sea level to the summit of Greece’s highest mount (2909m) on a route that takes you from the sea, through a dry river bed and then on beautiful trails up a stunning gorge to reach the slopes of Olympus herself, passing the evocative and serene ruins of the Monastery of Dionysus en route. Make your summit bid before descending to our cosy refugio for food, rest and big beers! The ent day you will hike out and finish your adventure, before being whisked to the coast for a well-earned night’s R and R on the azure beaches of the Aegean Sea.

THE ROUTE:

We will saddle up the transport and head for the short journey to the coast from our accommodation, where we will commence from Plaka Litochoro and ascend via a rough n’ ready dry river bed; before connecting with quiet roads and dusty tracks back towards the town of Litochoro, where we spent the previous night. From there, we are on the mountain proper and will continue towards the refuge on lovely trails and up through the gorge of Dionysus, surrounded by pine forests. We will arrive at Prionia as dawn breaks for snacks and drinks prior the ‘mountain proper.’ From here we ascend to the refuge, where we will enjoy another Pit Stop before continuing on our summit bid. Olympus is fairly unique in having multiple summits: Your route will termnate at the generally accepted most ‘popular’ summit of Stefani at 2909m. You will have completed 3.5km of vertical ascent in a day, over 27km! This is a very big shift in anyone’s book and not to be underestimated. From the summit, you will descend back to the refuge for food, rest and some well-earned beers.

We will descend the next day back to Prionia (approx. 2.4 hrs descent), where transport will whisk you out to the coast for a beautiful afternoon relaxing on the shores of the Aegean. We will enjoy a celebration meal and a round of drinks on us that evening and toast a job well done!

When we are staying in hotels and guesthouses, we will endeavour to provide cooked options.

Each night we will eat together at a restaurant or pub, or when camping we will provide catering on-site. At all times, Rat Race will provide a hearty main course. If you wish to augment with other selections in the pubs and restaurants, you may do so. You will settle the bill for your own drinks.

Salty snacks – such as crisps and peanuts.
Savoury treats – We will feature sandwiches, savoury pastries and other goodies at selected pit stops, around lunchtime

FAQs:

The date-range is set and the route is tried and tested. However, our challenges unfold in some of the most spectacular places on Earth. Sometimes we do have to change plans on account of weather, injury or other unforeseen factors. If we do have to do so, you will be informed and usually, these unforeseen changes simply add to the flavour of proceedings and provide for a good story to tell at day’s end!
We are mindful that people will inevitably have varying distances to travel to Thessaloniki on 3rd Sep 2021. Which is why we will commence our itinerary from the airport, to ensure it is as easy as possible for you to connect with our event itinerary. We will be providing accommodation this evening at the charming mountain town of Litochoro, together with a afternoon/ evening registration and an early evening meal with briefing, in a bid to give you all the best possible chance of an early night. It is, after all, a very early morning the next day!

Yes no problem. If you wish to rent a car and keep your own schedule on the transfers, you can self-transfer to/ from the event hotels at the start and finish of the challenge, if you so wish.

You will be transferred from our event hotel to the startline in our transport. Indeed all transfers throughout the challenge are fully inclusive within the format.
We have designed this challenge so that you may travel at your own pace. See below for our notes on route-finding and guidance. There will also be some cut-offs, but in the true Rat Race tradition these will be generous and we will always look to help you to achive your goals in finishing this challenge, vs having to pull out. Of course, we are giving you a VERY early start to allow the very best possible window for route completion. But, if you need us and if you need to abandon the route for whatever reason, we are there for you. The absolute key is that you enjoy this amazing journey from sea level to the very roof of Greece at your own pace and within your own limits.
We want you to concentrate on the views and the hard work of putting one foot (or pedal) in front of the other. So we don’t want you to be staring at maps or navigational aids any more than you have to. The route will be way-marked, with some assistance from our staff and some signage in the trickier sections, and in the early morning dark sections).

We will also be asking you to download a route file that you will be able to download onto your smartphone. You will follow this ‘line’ when on foot and can use this as a back-up at all times.

Don’t worry – you won’t get lost. But if you do – support is never far away.

We will use a mixture of guides, waymarking, pit stops and support vehicles (lower down the mountain) to support you at intervals by our mobile ‘pit stop’ team. Once you get higher, we will use set points to support, such as the refuge. We will also have our local guiding and safety team on the mountain. We will have multiple vehicles at our disposal, plus multiple staff members, snacks and drinks to distribute. So, if it does get too much, if you overheat, get too cold, need sustenance, motivational support or otherwise, we should be able to assist. You are in good hands.
We can accommodate a limited number of supporters. We can provide accommodation and meals for them with you on a shared basis, plus meals. The supporter package price is outlined on our pricing page, here.

Rat Race require you to be over 18 on the day of Registration.
This is a very big day out. BUT the Rat Race ethos is to extraordinary challenges for ordinary people. You do not need super-technical skills or to be a seasoned endurance athlete. You need a good base fitness and train for a big mountain ascent over several hours. It’s a huge day on the hill, but it is definitely designed to be ‘doable;’ and not a sufferfest. You have it in you. We will ensure we support you the very best way we possible can. There is enough time to trek the whole thing and unless you really are off the pace, we will try not to cut you off.
It starts in a dry river bed which is dusty, rough in places and fairly hard-packed in others. You will then transition to local tracks and minor roads before hitting ‘the trail’ which takes you up the spectacular Gorge of Dionysus. On the upper reaches of the mountain, the going is good on firm and well-defined trails. It is rocky in places of course – it is a mountain after all!

Yes. 2 nights’ hotel, on a twin basis are provided, plus 1 at a mountain refuge. All meals are also provided for the duration of the challenge.

Solo entries are non-transferable – you can’t give or sell your entry to anyone else. If you no longer wish to take part you can obtain an event credit to the value of your entry fee paid (terms and a fee apply) which you or another person can use towards next year’s event (or any other Rat Race event).

Check out our Rat Rewards membership and bag yourself a hearty 10% saving on this event, plus heaps of other rewards, such as Rat Race Store credit, free insurance and free transfers.
Race entry includes a glorious finishers medal and a collectable Rat Rag. Exclusive event t-shirts will be available to purchase from the Rat Race online store here.

We will collect you via the Sweeper vehicles and move you forwards on the course if is in the lower reaches of the course. (subject to medical advice if it is a medical issue that has forced you to pull out). We are unable to transport you backwards (i.e. we cannot take you back to the start). If you need to pull out further up the course where we cannot access the route with vehicles, in all cases where you are below the refuge we will ask you to head to Prionia for road extraction, of if you are above the refuge, you will head back down to our support team at the refuge.

Sorry we cannot accommodate dogs on the route, in the hotels or at the refuge.

No. We do not offer refunds but we do offer event transfer vouchers, so you can put your credit to another event. We need 2 clear months notice prior to the event to make these changes plus you will need to pay a £15.00 charge and 15% value (less the £15 paid) fee. Our pricing structure rewards those that commit furthest in advance and we recommend customers hold the appropriate insurance to cover non-attendance for issues such as illness or travel problems. Transfer requests can be made here. You can find full Terms and Conditions here.
